About me

Hi, I’m Jennifer

Jennifer from Best Words Copywriting trekking in Madrdi mountains.

Empowering your voice

One word at a time

Words whizzing past you

But not hitting the page? I feel you!

Hi, great to see you here! Let me guess. You are writing. Well trying to. New copy for your website, an article, perhaps an email. You’ve got plenty to say, but you’re on Mute. And this time it’s not an online call.

Call it perfectionism or procrastination. Mixed with a sprinkling of self-doubt. I know them all well. I also know that writing about yourself and your business is a skill.

A skill you can develop if you ‘really, really wanna zig a zzz’. With a little help (from yours truly!).

Over thirty years in ELT

How did that happen?

Late at night, September 1990, I landed in Málaga, south of Spain. Got to the station and managed to buy a ticket to Espelúy! Pointing at the map. My CELTA certificate in my rucksack. ‘I’ll be here for a year’, I thought.

Fast forward (but not too quickly!) to Best Words Copywriting. The journey here started with that train trip. Three decades of climbing the ELT career ladder. Teacher, DOS, centre manager, trainer, editor and – the pinnacle – publisher!

I met teachers and learners from all over the world. Visited classrooms across Spain, in Turkey, Mexico and even Senegal. Worked with well-known authors and keen-eyed editors. Attended events, went to conferences. Became part of an international community of dedicated educators.

Suddenly it hit me. Boom! Creating coursebooks was not for me anymore. Getting words onto the page, seeing an idea become a reality is a buzz, yes. But language learning isn’t just about grammar tables and tests. It transforms lives – career, travel, exposure to culture. It boosts confidence and is good for the brain.

How could I combine my teaching experience, editorial expertise, knowledge of writing and feedback skills? Become a copywriter for ELT and Education! I’d been one without knowing it – those book covers, catalogues and product descriptions!

So, I pumped up my writing skills. And learnt a few more from my wonderful copy coaches. Got to grips with the basics of SEO. Took UX trips around a lot of websites. Sizzled in the Copy Hot Seat. It’s more fun than it sounds BTW. Think Turkish bath temperature combined with feedback on your writing.

Collaboration is key

Teamwork makes the dream work

You can't publish a book without a team. Believe me! And that’s the way I like to work. We’ll take your words and my skills. Mix them together and get great results.

I’m practical and pragmatic. I’ve managed 6-level publishing projects with big buck budgets. So processes don’t frighten me! You’ll know what’s happening at each step of the way.

I love my digital tools and a bit of tech. But I’m not 100% OK with AI writers or computer-generated texts. Your content is for real people. Let’s make it human.

I’m not the copywriter for you if your brand story is being a ‘native speaker’. That term is definitely past its sell-by date.

I’ve gone through your feedback and I’m so impressed with how thorough and helpful you’ve been. Not only have you highlighted some important issues about messaging, but you’ve also given me some really practical advice about copy that is easy for me to take action on.

A wee bit more about me

Scottish parents, Hong Kong-born, South Pacific childhood, Jaenera by adoption, Spanish citizen.

‘You have a real way with words’, my teacher said. Before she read my essay aloud to the class … without asking! Talking about a beetroot face. I knew then I was happier backstage.

I’m careful with those pesky words ending in -ic, -ist and -ism. The ones that exclude people. Ageism really gets me going as an, er, more mature woman.

I’m happiest in a country where I only have a vague grasp of the lingo. On a bus or in a cafe (a bar!). Watching the world go by.

I’m a late-learning swimmer (at 54!) and a walker. Not at my desk? I’m in the pool or up a hill – even in the rain. A Scot at heart.
